Sheltering from the Cold

In Social studies we were learning about the frozen world and how the Inuits and Nenets live in this frozen world. So we made little flap books. On the flap books we compared their shelters by draining an igloo and a chum. We showed the outside of the shelters on top and when you flipped it open we drew diagrams showing the inside. The Inuits live in Igloos. Igloos are houses made out of snow and ice. The Nenet shelters are called Chums. Chums are tents made out of reindeer skins. We explained how to make one and the materials needed. It was really fun learning how the Inuits and Nenets live.

Multiplication – Box Method

In Grade 2-5 we have been learning multiplication. I have been learning the box method to solve questions like 6 x 324. When using the box method I would draw a box and divide it into three parts. Above each part I would write the value of each digit in 324 above each section. So that would be 300, 20 and 4. Then I write the 6 on the left. Each in box I multiply the top number by the number of the left and write the answer in the box. So it would be 6×300 and 6×20 sand 6×4 which would equal 1800, 120, and 24. Last step is to add all the answer together to find your answer. So 6 x 324 is = 1944. I like using this method.

My favorite subject is Math and I enjoyed multiplication the best of all. Even thought I learnt my timetable facts, I felt like I need to learn a whole lot more. I loved learning the grid method for 2 digits by 2 digits questions, because I can do it fast and it is easy. But I still think the written method was a great challenge for me. I think it was a good idea to write both at the same time because I can check the grid method, go back to the written method and work out if I have made a mistake. That way, I will be confident for the multiplication test again. It was really fun and I loved multiplying using both methods during Math class.

Who sunk the Kayak?

Did you know that the Inuits were the first ones to use a Kayak? Grade 2-3 had an important task to build a kayak that would float on water. It also had to hold as many dominoes as possible. First we picked our materials. They were; straws, lolly sticks, plastic, cardboard, paper, masking tape, scissors, glue, lids and tissue boxes. We wrapped plastic around the tissue box so the cardboard would not get wet. Then we added straws and sticks to help it float. We decided to make a lid and create a little flag for our boat. When we tested our Kayak it was really exciting as more and more dominoes were placed on own boat. It finally sunk after 106 dominoes. It held the most out of any ship.

Animal Adaptations – Surviving in the Frozen World

Did you know that animals have adaptations? This is something they have or do that helps them to survive in their location. It was fun to work in groups to research online and create posters. We learnt how different animals that live in the frozen world at the North and South Pole have adapted to survive. We had to show physical and behavioral adaptations. My groups’ animal was the Arctic Tern.

Celebration of Learning

Last Friday was the Grade 2-5 Celebration of learning. As a whole class we presented our animal adaptations. As a group we chose two adaptations to demonstrate and had to make a sketch demonstrating that adaptations.  JJ’s polar bear snoring to show hibernating made everyone laugh. Next grade 2 and 3 presented Art and French. For art we made comics about ourselves and for French we talked about transportation. Grade 4 and 5 showed they had learnt in PE and Music. For PE they performed a dance called the Californian Strut. For music they sand ‘Everybody wants to be a cat’. They sounded awesome.

Diary of Nenet

In Literacy we were learning about diaries. A dairy is a piece of writing that explains something you did or thought. It is written in past and it use “I” to show events and feelings. We have learnt all about the Nenets, who live in the Arctic Circle, and how they live their day to day lives. We had to create a dairy of a Nenet. I chose to write about a teenager who is just starting to learn all the different jobs adults have to do. I think my story is cool and I look forward to finishing my diary.

Adaptation Cubes

In Science we have been learning about animal adaptations. We constructed cubes that showed the different adaptations. On each side of the cube we wrote about one adaptations of the animals and explained how it helped that animal to survive in the Arctic or Antarctica. I was writing about the Emperor Penguin and it was fun! One physical adaption is it flippers which help it to swim and catch fish to each. One behavioral adaptation is that the male penguins huddle together to stay warm.
